Why Destin, Florida Is the Perfect Family Beach Getaway

We’ve visited Destin a few times now, and let me tell you—Florida’s Panhandle beaches are absolutely breathtaking! I’m talking powdery white sand, crystal-clear emerald waters, and sunsets that look like they belong on a postcard. Honestly, it feels like a tropical escape, except it’s right here in the U.S., just a road trip away.

Here’s why our family keeps going back—and why Destin might just become your favorite beach getaway too.

The Stay: Spacious, Affordable, and Beach-View Bliss

Each time we’ve gone to Destin, we’ve chosen Airbnb rentals over hotels—and it’s been the perfect choice for our big family (plus the extra guests we sometimes bring along). There’s an impressive range of options, and many of them are not only affordable but incredibly spacious. Two of the homes we rented even had beach views—waking up to the sound of waves and that view? Absolutely priceless.

The Vibe: Family-Friendly Fun with a Splash of Adventure

Destin strikes a perfect balance. It has a lively beach town energy but still feels very family-oriented—unlike some coastal cities that cater more to the party crowd. That said, there’s still plenty of fun for the adults (hello, delicious frozen cocktails!), but overall, it has a laid-back, welcoming feel.

One highlight was Crab Island, where you can rent boats with water slides right in the bay. On the HarborWalk Village boardwalk, my kids had a blast bouncing around in a giant inflatable bubble over the water while my husband and I braved a zipline (I did get stuck for a nerve-wracking moment—an anxious person’s nightmare—but I survived and would still recommend it!).

We also tackled an escape room and browsed cute local shops. Off the boardwalk, there’s even more fun: a small amusement park, a water park, and tons of other activities to keep everyone entertained from morning ‘til night.

The Drive: Worth Every Mile

Destin is located in the Florida Panhandle, and while it was a bit of a haul from Texas—around 11 hours—it was definitely manageable with kids. We hit the road early (around 3 or 4 a.m.) and made it there by daylight, which made a huge difference. Plus, the drive itself was surprisingly fun—we passed through several states and made some great memories on the way.

Final Thoughts: A Slice of Paradise, Close to Home

Every time we visit Destin, we leave feeling like we’ve been spoiled. There’s just no comparison between Florida’s beaches and the ones we’re used to in Texas. The sand, the scenery, the vibe—it’s truly something you have to experience for yourself.

If you’re looking for a beach destination that’s beautiful, exciting, and perfect for families, Destin is calling.

5 Places to Visit in Texas with Kids

As a mom of four, I’ve had to plan plenty of family trips on a budget. Thankfully, as a native Texan, sticking within state borders has always made sense—and not just for the savings. Texas is huge, and there’s no shortage of family-friendly adventures waiting to be discovered. While “close to home” can still mean hours on the road, those long drives often build excitement and create lasting memories. Whether you’re in the mood for big-city thrills, canyon views, or a relaxing beach day, Texas truly has it all.

Traveling in Texas is both budget-friendly and packed with fun for the whole family. I’ve put together a list of kid-approved destinations and some of the activities we’ve loved. Even though we live near one of these cities, I included it—because I’d hate for you to miss out on some great local gems!

San Antonio – History, Theme Parks, Culture

We’ve visited San Antonio a couple of times, and each trip was full of fun and learning. Here are a few highlights:

  • The River Walk – Best of all, it’s free! With art, culture, and beautiful scenery, it’s perfect for a family stroll.
  • The Alamo – Step into Texas history at this iconic site. Built in 1718, the Alamo was the first mission in San Antonio and offers a great educational experience.
  • Six Flags Fiesta Texas – A thrilling day awaits! My favorite ride was the Batman—don’t miss it!
  • Aquatica – Texas summers can be brutal. Cool off with slides, pools, and splash zones at this refreshing water park.

South Padre Island – Beachy, Scenic, Adventurous

We had an amazing time at South Padre, where beach life meets adventure.

  • Sandcastle Village – These incredible creations will blow your mind! It’s a must-see.
  • Louie’s Backyard – We loved dining on the deck with ocean views and tossing crab shells into the water to feed the fish. The kids were obsessed!
  • Gravity Park – Ready for a thrill? My husband and niece braved The Rocket, the world’s tallest reverse-bungee. The rest of us stuck to go-karts and the Ferris wheel.
  • South Padre Island Beach – Pack your towels, umbrellas, and sand toys for a relaxing beach day.

Galveston – Relaxing, Historic, and Kid-Friendly

Galveston offers a nice mix of beach time and entertainment.

  • Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier – Classic boardwalk fun with rides for everyone.
  • Schlitterbahn Water Park – One of the best water parks in Texas! With pirate-themed kiddie areas, wave pools, and a swim-up bar, there’s something for all ages.
  • Ferry Ride – This was a hit with our kids! We drove onto the ferry, spotted dolphins, and got out to enjoy the breeze. It’s a simple and fun experience—and budget-friendly too.

Dallas – Modern, Bold, Educational

Living in the metroplex hasn’t stopped us from playing tourist in our own city. There’s so much to explore!

  • Dallas World Aquarium – An engaging and educational outing for curious little minds.
  • Klyde Warren Park – Built over a highway, this unique park has food trucks, fountains, and a great playground.
  • American Airlines Center – Catch a Mavs game or enjoy a concert.
  • AT&T Discovery District – Great food, a play area, and Instagram-worthy photo spots.

Austin – Vibrant, Majestic, Expressive

Austin’s artsy vibe and natural beauty make it a great stop for families.

  • Texas Capitol – Take a guided tour and explore the history and architecture of this impressive building.
  • “I Love You So Much” Mural & More – Snap photos at iconic mural spots as you explore the creative side of the city.
  • Tubing the Guadalupe River – Cool off and soak in the scenery with a relaxing float down the river.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re enjoying city views, stepping back in time at the Alamo, or cooling off in a lazy river, Texas has something for every kind of traveler. So gather your crew, pack light, love heavy… and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Love, Chaos, and Adventure: A Glimpse Into Our Family’s Travel Life

The idea of traveling as a family sounds dreamy—until you’ve listened to hours of Cocomelon on repeat, and your teenager starts doing what they do best: complain.

Let’s be real—it can be completely overwhelming. Sometimes, it’s enough to make you want to cancel the trip altogether.

But then come the smiles, the unexpected moments, the memories you’ll never forget. And suddenly, all the chaos feels worth it. Traveling becomes addictive. Those little bursts of joy will have you searching for future flights during nap time. If you know, you know.

Meet Our Travel Crew

We’re a family of six living in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas. While we love our home base, we thrive on exploring new places together. Personally, I’m a beach lover at heart. But we’ve also ventured into the mountains, taken spontaneous road trips, and explored everything from the West Coast to the East Coast.

Yes, even lost a child at Disney—but don’t worry, it ended well (and gave us a story we’ll never forget!).
